Holyshit if there is no formal training then I am an Investigated Genealogist. Spent five years on my family tree. Down the rabbit hole of rabbit holes, got over 200 years on my father's father side, almost 230 years on my father's mother paternal side and another 200 years on her maternal side.
I just gotta say I love your show so much. Seriously brightens my day during hard and heavy times. You are an awesome person and I am so glad you’ve chosen this path. Love love love you and your show!
TLDR; Dna databases can identify close relatives of unidentified crime scene dna. Ideally matches 3rd cousin or better from both mom & dad side. A genealogist can then build family trees for matches (from standard genealogy records). Family trees are built back until a common grandparent (great, great great etc) is found between mom and dad side matches. After common ancestor couple is identified, a family tree is built back down to identify all possible decedents. Each of decedents are research in public databases to see if any where living in area when crime occurred. Ideally a group or a couple sibling groups are found. The likely sibling groups are provided back to law enforcement to obtain direct dna samples to confirm identity of unidentified remains or suspect. If criminal suspect after arrest an evidentiary buccal (check) sample is taken and directly compared to crime scene DNA (or unidentified remains)
I can't hear a word from the court, so I turn it up and BANG! Emily is shouting at me haha! I know I can watch it on other streams, but I want Emily's reaction/advice, but I feel like my math teacher is going to make me stand outside my own bedroom haha!
I love you EDB. When you said “Are you done yet? Omg please. Sir, you are very wise. It’s just like, I feel like we know.” I was thinking the same thing. Lol
I have watched a couple channels about this and like always EDB you rocked it the best! ❤
As an adoptee I’ve done this process. I lucked out and a maternal uncle also tested, but I had my paternal tree built out already and my bio father was in it.
Replay crew. This is fascinating and could mean new case law is made perhaps? Love watching you, have a fab weekend and see you all on Tues. ❤
My brain is actively tuning out the court audio because of the quality (yay auditory processing disorder + ADHD lol). Thank you EDB for covering it and making sure we got the good bits.
It was awesome to see you on the Depp v Heard Netflix documentary.
