Things aren’t looking good for GitHub…

So the TL;DR is: GitHub peaked with Copilot, got comfy under Microsoft, stopped shipping anything exciting, and now they're slowly speedrunning ‘How to Become Irrelevant’ while AI eats their lunch.

I think the fact that GitHub missed out on AI infra to Hugging face is a big deal you didn't talk about.

I honestly don't think Git is a bad primitive for AI. I think with a good setup like what Zed is doing using work trees, it can carry us way further. Most of the interaction I've seen between LLMs and Git has either been a) human-controlled VC or b) LLM controlled VC through directly using the command line. Maybe creating a Git tool could work better than having it use the CLI? There is a lot of work to be done still, and I think if it works well for searching and file editing, it could work well for VCS.

I love your "legacy sentiment" concept, I think a similar way I conceptualize things is in terms of goodwill. Like banked up goodwill. When you do something huge and awesome, it buys you a lot of goodwill, so naturally it can take a long time to "spend" it, similar to your comment of keeping well earned positive sentiment longer than you would otherwise reasonably expect to. If you look at that sentiment as almost a currency, it makes more sense to me. Bigger good thing = keep legacy sentiment longer. Aka, bigger good thing = big bank of goodwill, takes longer to spend.

Thank you for going back over the history of how things developed. I love when you put things into a historical perspective as that often so important to how we got here.
