Sometimes a Landscape painting is anything but a painting of a landscape. This is a film about José María Velasco, an artist who specialised in incredibly detailed landscapes, and was once a household name - but now is practically unknown outside the country of his birth, Mexico. When thinking about Mexican nationalism and cultural identity, figures like Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera often take centre stage. Their iconic works have become synonymous with Mexican art. However, Velasco’s landscapes, particularly The Valley of Mexico, are often overlooked in these discussions. IMPORTANT! I'm Mexican, and this is one of my favorite painters ever; perhaps my favorite Mexican one. This is one of my favorite YouTube channels, and to find out a Mexican artist other than Rivera or Kahlo made me so excited. There are so many great artists in Mexico, but as you say, barely known in other countries. Watching this video made me so proud of the vast culture in my country. Thank you! Dr Atl, Gerardo Murillo is also an amazing landscaper with an interesting background on geology. Check him out.

The art has so much more depth when someone explains the context.

Thank you so much! This artist isn't someone I was previously familiar with, his work is beautiful. The sunlight present in the paintings is so tangible, it warms me to look at them.

How fascinating to see the creation of Mexico as nation through the careful, loving eye of this painter. Your comparison of the painting with the modern city was eye opening. Aztec, Catholic, and Spanish constructions are completely dwarfed by the two mountains. Who you are, what you bring, is nothing compared to what the land offers. Long ago, I was given a medal of Our Lady of Guadalupe, but I never quite understood how important she was to the people of Mexico until this video. Thank you for another artistic treat.
