Description

Thanks to Cisco for sponsoring me to come to CiscoLIVE 2025. This trip would not have been possible without them! Check out CiscoU: http://U.cisco.com/tutorials I went to Cisco LIVE 2025 to answer one question, "Is there a future for network engineers?"...are we going away? Is AI finally going to replace us? The theme at Cisco Live this year was definitely AI...you couldn't turn a corner without being bombarded by AI marketing. Answering these questions was my mission; I interviewed Cisco employees and network engineers attending the conference to get down to the bottom of this. **Sponsored by Cisco SUPPORT NETWORKCHUCK --------------------------------------------------- ➡️NetworkChuck membership: https://ntck.co/Premium ☕☕ COFFEE and MERCH: https://ntck.co/coffee Check out my new channel: https://ntck.co/ncclips 🆘🆘NEED HELP?? I live in the Caribbean, on one of the smaller islands, where we’ve had a national brewery that’s been around for over 40 years. Recently, the company adopted robotics in its production process, leading to the displacement of a significant number of employees. Within just six months, the transition ran into major issues—so much so that management had no choice but to recall many of the workers they had let go. > > Unfortunately, by then, it was too late. Many of those employees—most of whom had been with the company for years—had already moved on. The damage was done. Declining productivity and a sharp drop in product quality took their toll, and eventually, the owner was forced to sell the business. Moral of the story, we need to be very careful and not get too ahead of ourselves regarding AI

Great video Chuck! I really can't predict where AI's going to take network engineering, but I feel optimistic that we won't be going away anytime soon, although it's clear that there are going to be big changes. We've heard before that cloud is going to remove the need for network engineers, or automation is going to remove the need for network engineers, etc...still going strong!

Chuck you talked to many people who already have years of experience in the industry, they are optimistic not because of AI can help them better do their job but more likely they already have the social connection established. They are already in Cisco! So even if they lose their current job as a network engineer, they can probably find an alternative relatively quickly. But how about the new grads and junior engineers? They are the groups of people getting the most impact by AI and the industries seem to have their doors shuted. I am only seeing half of the truth here.

AI eliminating those mundane tasks is already a major problem because those tasks are meant for junior engineers with no experience. AI eliminating most entry-level jobs will collapse the US economy because no one will be able to have careers and make money to buy company products.

As a software dev wannabe, there's barely any ads for juniors. Those in your video saying engineers aren't going away are well established professionals. They themselves will still have a job. The job pipeline is already bringing way less starters through, and that's been apparent for years now. Jobs are going; and the new jobs from the AI revolution come in the form of what? Are they even tech-related? You're right to be worried about engineers Chuck. I'm also worried about those trying to get in door, and not just in tech as well.

I’d like to see an AI plug an RJ-45 into a switch.

At this rate, your video title should be, "When did A.I. replace network engineers...?"
