They were ignoring Johnny early in the movie multiple times. I think that feeds into his growth and showing he can contribute more than being the fire guy.
One of the few times I disagree with Coy. I feel like the time Coy grew up in, human torch was far more akin to Chris Evans' portrayal but with this movie harkening back to the 4's inception under Kirby and Lee, Quinn's portrayal seems spot on with the sensibilities of the late 50s/60s. Also they establish its been 4 years and clearly there's been growth in that time as he's gotten older. He seems like he's searching for autonomy this entire movie. He's constantly asking for permission, being told where to go and what to do and functions more as a tool to be used by everybody else so when he chooses to decode the surfers language by himself instead of taking it to Reed and chooses to make the sacrifice to take out galactus, it feels so impactful and mirrors the surfers relationship perfectly which is why his plan to flip the surfer works because he's the only person who understands her not having autonomy
In every depiction of the F4 I've seen, Johnny always felt like he was just along for the ride. It was hard to imagine him as an astronaut with all the skills and knowledge that's necessary for that role. This Johnny felt like he earned his place on that ship. He was a smart guy who clearly had a passion about being an astronaut. That makes him so much more interesting.
I love Reed saying “I don’t know” which means a lot when he says it. And Johnny being smart.
See, I think this version of Jonny Storm makes more sense for a scientist and an astronaut. If he was an impulsive teenager, why would he even go to space to get his powers? Also, we are 4 years in when the movie begins, so the characters are supposed to be more fully developed and mature.
I like Coy's takes and opinions a lot because he's a comic authority, but I'm surprised he's caught up with the Johnny Storm character so much when they kinda laid it out that four years have passed and they've been very busy heroes since. I already accepted the mature take on the character because he ought to have had some hard lessons and growing up during that time of the montage. Also, as someone who did a large school project on NASA, it's more relatable to me with a toned down Johnny Storm to be an astronaut, and not just some wild, impulsive guy.
46:12 I was HORRIFIED when the surfer REACHED INTO SUE’S STOMACH TO TAKE FRANKLIN!!!! insanity.
I understand Coy’s issue with Johnny, but to me these characters having already come to be their “best selves” before the movie starts is part of the point. That’s also why there’s a bit more warmth to Reed- this is a group of fully realized and comfortable people, or as close as they’re likely to get to such a thing.
Galactus had swagger and imposition: "Clever little bugs"
