The Worst JAMES BOND Movie EVER | Casino Royale Review
Analyzing the Chaotic Failure of the 1967 Spoof Casino Royale
Discover why the 1967 Casino Royale is a messy, non-EON production that failed to achieve successful satire despite its legendary cast and premise. Learn how its chaotic direction and psychedelic finale highlight the necessity of cohesive vision in comedy.
Short Summary
- The 1967 film exists outside the official EON continuity and lacks the respect afforded to canonical Bond entries.
- Production was highly fragmented, involving five directors, resulting in a chaotic plot resembling Austin Powers rather than sharp parody.
- The film features actors from the main series and references key cinematic trademarks, but ultimately loses narrative focus in a lengthy runtime.
- Its strongest contribution remains the Burt Bacharach score, specifically "The Look of Love," which earned an Academy Award nomination.
This review orients the reader to the production history, casting peculiarities, and ultimate narrative failure of the 1967 Casino Royale. Understanding this flop provides critical context on what makes the official EON franchise formula successful.

I had to be thorough. Diamonds are Forever vid is being worked on and should be out in about a month. Much love xxx
I already knew where this was going from the title alone and I'm here for it. Keep up the great work Paul!
"Finger birds" had me howling! 😂
Nah. It's actually better than Die Another Day. 😂 I'd watch it 10/10 times over that.
Paul! You know exactly what you're doing with that title and I respect it.
This movie definitely had all the vibes of Peter Seller's "The Party", and the other psychedelic tinged films of the era like "What's New Pussycat, "The Magic Christian", all the Pink Panther films, all the Matt Helm films. I'm not sure it was ever supposed to make sense as a Bond movie, all of those movies of the mid to late 60's were full of "what weird stuff will appear next" content.
That 'long, rambling joke' analogy is probably the best explanation of this film that I've ever seen.
The insanity of this movie almost can't be spoken, it must be lived to be fully appreciated 😆 - it's a Bond movie with a parody plot tossed in a blender and a Mel Brooks ending
How dare the algorithm hide this from me for 39 seconds
There are some absolute gems in this movie though. The Peter O'toole & George Raft cameos are hilarious. But yeah, an absolute nightmare to make. Welles & Sellers hated each other so much they wouldn't be on set together. The scene where they're playing against each other was shot on different days with stand ins.
