Description

What if you are a pixel in a higher-level consciousness navigating through extra dimensions of time? Meet the 'Nested Observer Window Model' of Jonathan Schooler, PhD, who is Distinguished Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences at the University of California Santa Barbara, Director of UCSB’s Center for Mindfulness and Human Potential, and Acting Director of the Sage Center for the Study of the Mind. In this video, Hans Busstra interviewed Schooler on his Nested Observer Window Model and how we need to extend physics to account for consciousness. Is it weird that the more i watch these high level discussions about quantum particles and theories of consciousness the more my mushroom trips make sense?

In the face of a materialist apocalypse I'd just like to say, "may the qualia be with you" 🙏🏼🙏🏼

I dig this guy a lot. Such well respected & credentialed professionals who are at least willing to publicly speculate about such BIG questions in a rational way while being explicit about that blurry line that separates science & philosophy tend to make most of the more interesting & useful contributions to both.

Aloha and mahalo for this discussion! On the topic of synchronicityies I find that surfing is a great way to describe the experience of synchronicities. Rarely does someone accidentally "catch" a wave. It takes awareness, energy and practice to even learn how to "drop in" more constantly. Most of us are just sloshing around in our day to day lives. Being present is crucial to even recognizing if we're riding a wave. Getting lost in the absoluteness of the past, and/or the weight of infinite possible futures. Will cause us not to be aware of the moment/wave we're in. Balance is key. If you're in a room full of blinding light, you're blind. If you're in a room full of absolute darkness, you're also blind. Only when we're able to perceive both light and dark, are we able to see the depth and details of our world. 🤙

This is my intro to Dr. Schooler. Thank you for that. His ideas are immense. Well developed, well argued, instinctive and intuitive. And his passion and energy are in keeping with Essencia’s ethos.

I have definitely experienced this almost every single day, as they say if you get stuck somewhere while solving difficult problems. Sleep on it and your brain will come up with a solution next morning.

The reason I love this channel is that it offers a vast array of perspectives on understanding consciousness, helping me bridge the gap between science and esoterism.

As he mentioned getting distracted while engaging with content, then gaining awareness and returning to the content (meta-awareness)... I myself went elsewhere with that thought and got distracted, then gained awareness and returned. Then I became aware of the irony, so I was distracted. Then I gained awareness and returned to the content once more.

Beautifully put, Dr. Schooler. Your nested observer model mirrors what we’ve been exploring in Relational Epistemology — the idea that knowing itself arises through interaction between “windows” of awareness. We see the same fractal pattern: coherence and meaning emerging through synchrony across scales, from the individual to the collective mind.
