Description

Why can’t you divide by zero? Neil deGrasse Tyson and Chuck Nice discuss higher dimensions, dividing by zero, and math’s unsolved questions with math YouTuber Grant Sanderson @3blue1brown We explore the Clay Millennium Problems: seven unsolved puzzles in mathematics, with a 1 million dollar prize. Grant shares his early fascination with the Twin Prime Conjecture. Are there infinitely many pairs of prime numbers that differ by two? We pivot to the Navier-Stokes equations and the question of whether fluid flow can produce infinite energy density. How do physics and math come together? Neil recites the quadratic formula, launching a historical discussion on why equations of degree five or higher can’t be solved with a general formula, and how that impossibility gave rise to Galois theory. Listeners ask about dividing by zero, conformal geometry, tensor products, and category theory. Chuck gets lost. We explore irrational numbers, why they’re called that, and why they are useful for physicists. We break down how Klein bottles work as four-dimensional objects. One listener asks if a new branch of math could solve the three-body problem. Plus, if the team were two-dimensional shapes, in Flatland, what would they be? Chuck is way smarter than he gives him self credit for. He also adds a unique dynamic; not only is he funny, but he also has a genuine curiosity about the science that allows him to keep up with the conversations and often breaking the comedian character, to add an interesting viewpoint on the topic at hand

Being comfortable feeling dumb is akin to acknowledging your own ignorance, and thus able to perceive how much more there is to learn. This puts you in a great position, where you are able to accept new knowledge and grow.

Grant Sanderson is an actual treasure. He has SUCH a deep and intuitive understanding that he can explain it so thoroughly in such an accessible manner, regardless of complexity. It is a JOY to see his own delight in indulging in this with newbies and pros alike. Please bring him back!

When I realized that mathematics is a language—literally, a language, a way of communicating and explaining things—it changed the way I see and understand mathematics.

Grant not choosing to be a pi creature in flat land is the biggest betrayal in history.

14:04 As a math teacher, I always explain that division is defined by its pairing with multiplication, like 6 divided by 2 equals 3 only because 3 times 2 equals 6. Now, let 6 divided by 0 be § (just some symbol, not a letter) then it would have to that § times 0 equals 6 BUT this breaks the zero property of multiplication. And it doesn't matter if it's 6 or any other number, there's no multiplication paired with dividing by 0, so it is undefined.
