Exploring The Origins of Life, with Kerstin Göpfrich
Creating Life From Scratch: Synthetic Biology, Evolution, and Astrobiology
Discover the cutting edge of synthetic biology where researchers attempt to build cells from the bottom up. Learn the fundamental definitions required for life to begin, evolve, and potentially thrive elsewhere in the cosmos.
Short Summary
- Define life as a self-sustaining chemical system capable of open-ended evolution.
- Explore how RNA nanotechnology and computational design function as the chemical toolkit to assemble novel molecular structures.
- Understand why Earth life exhibits molecular handedness (homochirality) and how this informs the search for extraterrestrial biology.
Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson hosts Professor Kerstin Göpfrich, a pioneer in synthesizing life from basic components, to examine the transition from chemistry to biology. This discussion covers the architectural simplifications necessary to kickstart evolution and the critical ethical considerations surrounding the creation of living entities in the lab.

I have said it before, and I will say it again. It is so refreshing how excited scientists are about their science. Dr. Gopfrich is a perfect example. Thank you for your insight and your enthusiasm! Great episode!
I love her sign, "keep calm and do science"
If we manage to create life in a lab before we find it in space, does that mean the first alien life we meet... is one we made ourselves? If so, what would we name said life we created?
Kerstin's energy and enthusiasm was absolutely contagious. Her obvious love of what she does kept me rooted.
I love seeing people enjoy what they do!!
Her enthusiasm and positivity are infectious. Thank you for this interview. Especially as being a fellow German guy. :D
I love her excitement & enthusiasm of her work. Her smile is infectious.
Please,Please bring her back. Not only was the subject interesting, her enthusiasm is infectious.
Her enthusiasm is intoxicating. It is wonderful that there are people like this.
She shines due to her absolute pleasure of being a scientist in the field of life! A gem of our society… great!
