It would be comforting to think that increased use of iodine by oceanic life -> less iodine molecules in the stratosphere -> more ozone -> a chance for land-based life not scoured by UV However, it is rare that such complex systems can be boiled down to a simple sequence. It might be true, but there are probably other factors at work that muddy the simple dynamical sequence.

Almost a similar situation with The Great Oxygenation Event which caused a mass extinction but also led to the proliferation of oxygen-based life. It's not the length of time that's necessary, but the right conditions.

We are sooooo lucky to have the Ozone. The prospects for complex, land based astrobiology on a terrestrial planet seem slim, if getting UV protection is so precarious and it remains fragile.
