American Tourists Accused of Murder in Paradise: A Reversed Conviction

Discover the crucial evidence that led to the wrongful conviction of one American tourist for murder in the British Virgin Islands and the final appeal that secured his freedom.

Short Summary

  • Three of four American defendants secured immediate dismissal of murder charges due to weak circumstantial evidence.
  • The sole remaining defendant, William Labrador, was convicted primarily based on the testimony of a cellmate informant.
  • The British appellate court overturned Labrador’s life sentence, branding the key witness a compulsive liar.
  • This case highlights the dangers of relying on circumstantial data (sand and trace blood) over clear proof in a foreign jurisdiction.

This segment investigates the 2000 murder of Lois McMillan on Tortola, British Virgin Islands, focusing on four American vacationers charged with the crime. The reporting details the initial arrests based on slight physical correlations, the 16-month incarceration, the divergence of outcomes during the trial, and the ultimate, dramatic exoneration years later. Understanding this sequence reveals critical flaws in evidence sufficiency and witness credibility.

I am offended that these grown men are referred to as "boys". This terminology is used to soften them and to make them seem innocent and framed. I am 100% convinced that Labrador did it.

If the blood evidence is still around, it would be interesting to retest with modern DNA analysis.

The McMillens died without justice for their daughter. I pray that they are all resting in peace together.

Thank God. I'll be 47 next week and have been calling myself a "man" for years, but if they're "boys" then I'm going to start referring to myself as a "young" man. Midlife crisis averted.

You can always tell who’s lying — the ones who talk most about how honest they are.
