I have all kinds of empathy and sympathy for parents with children who do criminal things, even horrible criminal things like this. However, I have none of that for parents who conceal their children in some way and don't encourage them to tell the truth and do the right thing. What is outrageous besides the Laundries behavior is a state that makes laws that it's okay to hide a family member's criminal acts. Maybe he was immediate family but he was a grown ass adult. They should have some kind of consequence. The criminal law needs to change.
The minute he returned home with her van and not Gabby and he and the parents went radio silent we all were like the fuck? That’s not a thing.
The problem here exists because, instead of remaining silent, they Laundrys via their attorney stated that they hoped that the Petitos would find Gabby inferring that she was still alive at least after Brian left her. They would not be in this civil action if the Laundrys remained silent, as was their right.
I wanna say Emily that I appreciate you saying "What they did is awful and I can understand why the Petito's are upset" and "Brian is fucking awful, he murdered someone" but at the same time give the Laundrie's the grace in that... they lost their kid too. Especially when going over their attorney saying that they were under distress at the time as well. Cause here's the thing. I'm just as mad at the Laundrie's as anyone else. They should have helped find Gabby in my opinion, and they also shouldn't have hidden their son. As a mother to a little boy... I can tell you right now that if my son murdered someone in cold blood I would tell him to turn himself in and get an attorney. I wouldn't help hide him. That being said... My step sister had an older brother. He got killed by a cop. He was in a stand off with police and in the end he died by gunfire. It was all over local news and people were saying the worst things about him. Which is fair, when a criminal does a criminal thing... talk about it. But it hurt my sister SO BAD to hear the things people were saying. To her, her brother wasn't a criminal that "deserved what he got". He was her brother, and he was a good brother to her. He was loved by his family and he was just gone. I don't even remember what started the stand off. I was too young, but I remember the hurt on my sisters face every time someone talked about him and how he died and how he deserved it. Without anyone ever saying "our condolences to the family". I'm not saying that the knowledge that someone who did a bad thing has family that care about them should change how they are talked about. I am saying... that it's nice if when a person does a bad thing... that people also take the time to say "I'm sorry for your loss though..." Because behind every criminal is a family that loved them. The Laundrie's lost a son too. He murdered Gabby and that's fucking awful. The Laundrie's helped cover for him (my opinion) and that is awful. They are still two parents who lost a son, someone that when they looked at they saw memories of first steps, first words, school pictures and dances, and family holidays.
My thoughts are that because Brian told them that "Gabby was gone" and that Brian told them he needed a lawyer and because came home without Gabby in Gabby's vehicle and because they hired a criminal lawyer practicing in Wyoming, I do think that not being honest with Gabby's parents about what they knew that both Mr Bertinino and Brian's mom and Dad all three committed an act that borders on cruel and intentional actions and statements made were reckless the lawyers statements were outrageous and did give hope he knew was false hope. I understand that the lawyer's were hands were tied so he probably should have not made any statement because he knew that Gabby was probably dead . He probably did not mean to be cruel but I believe he intentionally did give them false hope.
I just can’t wrap my head around how or why the Laundries aren’t being held accountable criminally for harboring a fugitive or accessory after the fact. There are other cases where someone gets life because they were driving but had no clue as to what happened or were just with the party who committed the crime even though they didn’t know it was going to happen. I think there is evidence here that shows that they did know and not only didn’t tell but whisked him away and even the fact that they led the police straight to his body is so suspicious.
When Brian said Gabbi was gone - if they genuinely thought she was just missing; why did they not contact her parents and let them know?
Regardless of what happens, I'm really glad they sued bc now they DO have more answers. And as always, shame on the Laundries.
Their statement was reckless and outrageous. It didn't do anything for the Laundrys because they were not going to help in any way to find Gabby and "reuniting with the family" does not happen if the family member is dead - and they knew she was dead. Finding her body just confirms whether or not she is alive or dead and presents the family with some details about her death and a body to bury. This not reunification as the Laundrys' statement infers. They were never going to tell anyone Gabby was dead and where to find her body. And making this statement didn't and wouldn't relieve the pressures on the Laundrys. So it was a wreck less and outrageous statement. They should have remained silent. If they had to make a statement after their son was dead, they could have said then their silence was for the protection of their son. However, if this statement did not give false hope to the Petitos, then maybe this litigation shouldn't happen. And based on this alone, Bertolini should not. E sued because he was just the messenger, the agent of the family which is his job.
Thank the lord, the YouTube family stumbled across the van, who knows when she would have been found.
