Actually this falls within Missy Elliot's law, the comet put it's thang down, flipped it, and reversed it.
In retrospect we probably shouldn't have assumed outgassing would ever be symmetrical. Stuff will jet out of these bodies in whatever direction is most convenient, so of course that will set up spins. They're fire extinguishers with the nozzle stuck on.
Whenever I out gas for a long time, I too will reverse course and try to leave the room as quickly as possible.
Most of us start releasing large amounts of gas as we age, eh?
"What do you mean there are no more dinosaurs?"
Rocks floating through infinite emptiness at orbital speeds sonetimes do things hairy primates don't anticipate. Who knew?
That spin flip is so cool. When sunlight warms a comet, tiny jets of gas can act like gentle thrusters, and over time that steady push can change how it rotates.
It forgot to turn off the oven
In my experience turning backwards comes first and then the outgasing.
