Ethan Hawke Details Physical Transformation and Artistic Critique in 'Blue Moon'
Gain insight into Ethan Hawke's demanding physical transformation for his role in Blue Moon, and understand how the film critiques the roots of American mythology established by classic theater.
Short Summary
- Hawke undertook complex makeup and hair styling, finding the comb-over more challenging than playing a shorter physical stature.
- Director Richard Linklater challenged Hawke to disappear into the role, requiring him to shed his established acting persona across their nine collaborations.
- The film, set after the premiere of Oklahoma!, examines how American culture began mythologizing itself during wartime, favoring comforting narratives over complex reality.
This discussion centers on Ethan Hawke’s new film, Blue Moon, which stages a pivotal, tense night in 1943 art history following the premiere of Oklahoma!. Readers will learn about the intense acting challenges Hawke faced working with director Richard Linklater again, and the film’s sharp commentary on historical narrative versus artistic reality.

You know, as much as I like his work, Ethan just always seems like a genuinely cool dude to be around.
One of the best actors with actual integrity and driven by a love for artistic merit. ❤
When I was a kid, I moved to West Windsor New Jersey. I was telling a friend about my favorite movie, "The Explorers". It is not well known but had Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix (even James Cromwell)! Anyway, Ethan Hawke is the same age as me around 14 at the time, and my friend told me he lived in our town. So I looked up the number and called. I got Ethan on the line. I stammered,, "Uh..... I really like The Explorers...." There was an uncomfortable pause and he says "... thanks.... my mom says dinner is ready...." I'll remember it forever. By the way, not surprised at all that his career took off. One of my favorites is Gattaca, besides The Explorers!
I watch every Ethan Hawke interview I can and he never misses
I effing love the Lowdown. There was a time in my life when I was so in that seedy, idealistic, dysfunctional weird life. Mine was in Long Beach in the 70's, and an antique store not a bookstore. I was basically Ethan Hawke's sidekick - my Ethan was Rodney. Had my life threatened. Was actually in a high speed (well, moderately high) chase. Did a couple weeks in jail. And while I dabbled in journalism I became a novelist. (Different name.) It was just so perfectly evocative. I was able to really show my wife what my life was before I met her and everything changed.
Heck yes Ethan Hawke.
Absolutely brilliant actor. Truly great American. ❤
just finished binging "The Lowdown" so excellent
The Lowdown is my favorite show right now. Great acting and great storytelling.
Ill forever imagine him living with White Fang. One of my favorite movies of all time, it derserved Oscars.
