Muons making it to detectors on the Earth's surface from high in the atmosphere, after being created by cosmic rays, proves that they actually experience time dilation. They shouldn't live nearly long enough to make it down, but because they are moving at nearly the speed of light, they last 70x longer. A pretty amazing confirmation of Special Relativity. :)

Basically, this muon discrepancy showed up because we were pushed to the limits of both the mathematical complexity of our models, and the sensitivity of our detectors (at least at Fermilab). All these Fermilab runs and recalculations were probably the biggest calibration effort ever undertaken by mankind. So now that we have such a solid model for these muons, this sets us up to use them to test other particles with improved accuracy and precision. Hopefully this sets us up for discoveries in the future.

Muons are “really really fat electrons.” lol

It's never lupus, it's never aliens and, sadly, never BSM physics.

"we were right!" is as important as "we didn't know this!" and "we were reeeeally off!"

On my A-Level EDUQAS physics paper today, there was a question on the discrepancy of the magnetic moment of a muon, and how physicists could go about proceeding with the findings! That's awesome!

The main utility of muons in all that expensive particle physics research is that no one has really used them much before, so it's easier to get research funding for studies that involve them. A lot of research has been carried out with those boring old electrons, so it's hard to come up with a research proposal involving electrons that sounds like a new and unique contribution to the field. If you say you are working with muons, on the other hand, the folks that hand out the research funding start to drool 🤣
