Discover how financialization and corporate short-term greed destroyed streaming value, leading consumers back to piracy and degrading the entire digital ecosystem. Learn the difference between unsustainable models and platforms that genuinely respect user ownership.
Short Summary
- Extreme content fragmentation and cumulative subscription costs (exceeding $100/month) have eroded consumer trust, reviving piracy.
- Financialization uses Leveraged Buyouts and Asset Stripping to extract short-term profits from legacy media, gutting quality via layoffs and cheap content filling.
- PE controls both the media content and the news reporting on it, burying the systemic issues concerning media ownership consolidation.
- Unlike streaming, platforms offering true ownership models (like Steam) successfully mitigate piracy by prioritizing a superior, stable user experience.
This analysis explains the systemic rot in modern streaming, gaming, and general online content consumption, linking rising piracy rates directly to private equity short-term profit motives rather than consumer choice alone.

Piracy never left in My life. " You'll own nothing and you'll be happy" doesn't work for me.
Death to the subscription model If I don’t own it with a one off payment, I’ll be owning it without paying a cent
"Private Equity." That's all I needed to hear to actually root for the pirates.
Lease the car, rent the home, borrow your entertainment… anyone else noticing the pattern here? You’ll own nothing and like it.
90% of the movies coming out of hollywood is crap. Who in their right mind want to pay for it.
