In my experience - feeling lonely doesn't mean I don't have connection. It means I'm focused on the relationships I don't have more than on the relationships I do have. For example, as a single guy, I have lots of good friends - but I want to be loved by a woman. Without a woman, sometimes I feel like I'm lonely, but I'm really not. I'm just getting too focused on what I don't have yet versus appreciating what I do have. So, when I feel lonely, I reframe that and it helps quite a bit. Maybe it'll help someone else.

Sonja is exposing a massive crisis that hits home hard, especially for guys in the trades. We are conditioned to think that loving our families means working ourselves to the bone, putting in 80-hour weeks, and carrying the weight of the entire business alone on our shoulders. We isolate ourselves in our trucks, constantly putting out daily fires, and completely miss out on real connection with our wives and kids because our minds are always stuck on the next job site. We tell ourselves it's just 'part of the grind.' But it’s a trap. True success isn't sacrificing your family life and your mental health for a paycheck. You don't get those years back. At some point, you have to drop the tough-guy act, realize the chaotic hustle is destroying your well-being, and start building the daily systems and structure that let you step away from the tools. The real goal of building an organized business isn't just to make money—it's to buy back your time so you can actually show up for the people who matter.

For introverts it's the type of socialness that exhausts. Meaningful conversations aren't as draining as general social nonsense: forced small talk with strangers, and so on. I'd like the see the research follow retail workers. I spent years forcing myself to be social because of public service work; I suffered from chronic exhaustion. The days I could work alone were fine, so it wasn't the work. I certainly feel exhausted when socially on too long, even with my crew. Anecdotal, but any American sample, I suspect, will have a bias in it that needs controlled for because of the culture's bias for chatter. Silence soothes the soul once you get used to it.

Love is often just consideration. It’s becoming rare.
