A Controversial New Cure for Alcohol Dependence - Katie Herzog
Katie Herzog Details Medical Treatment for Alcohol Use Disorder Beyond Abstinence
Discover the overlooked pharmacological pathway to reducing alcohol cravings, why traditional methods like AA fail certain drinkers, and how modern medicine offers non-abstinence routes for sobriety.
Short Summary
- Understand the difference between "Reward Drinkers" (who seek euphoria) and "Relief Drinkers" (who seek sedation).
- Learn about the Sinclair Method: using the opioid blocker Naltrexone before drinking to extinguish the pleasure response.
- Recognize that societal norms often treat excessive drinking as a 'badge of honor,' complicating interventions.
- Identify key risk factors for developing Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), including genetics and early exposure.
This discussion centers on journalist Katie Herzog’s journey quitting heavy drinking by embracing medication over willpower or traditional 12-step programs where she found cravings impossible to overcome. The conversation explores why doctors hesitate to prescribe effective, non-abstinent treatments and how cultural trends are shifting away from pervasive drinking.

Getting sober sucks at first and then it's the greatest thing you can imagine. Props
When you get the light bulb moment that there are a million things you can do; and only one thing you can’t, your whole life changes in unbelievably great ways! I was trapped for many years as an alcoholic. Met a counselor who walked in my shoes. I connected right away and he gave me the tools to stay sober for 13 years and counting. Love your channel!
I’m on day 45 of no alcohol, after having my first drink 29 years ago. I’ve been very lucky. I never had a fight or ended up in hospital, but I did crap my pants a few times. 😂
No drink for 6 days for me. Feeling really tired
i used this method aka 'the sinclair method' 7 years ago and over the course 6 months i reduced my insane daily binge drinking of over 10 years to occasionally having a few drinks. Over the next few years I lost complete interest in alcohol and now i don't drink at all. I was completely compliant with the method. This works, this is no joke. The documentary 'one little pill' shows how this works.
Huge fucking props to that kind of vulnerability in the first 3minutes of a podcast damn

I was getting ruined 7 days a week for many years and I took up boxing - now I only get wrecked three times a week which I’m quite pleased with
Katie is the first person I can actually relate to about alcoholism. It's as if she was describing my life, amazing.
Drinking at 59 and the guy I line is 33 years old. Drinking didn’t solve a damn thing just made me feel like crap and I’m still single.
