The problem with Tristans suggestions that we the people stop AI and implement some guard rails and governance to protect us is that we are a civilization that no longer has morals, and the wealthiest and most powerful people among us are actively working AGAINST anything that allows the common people to protect and govern themselves. We serfs are being deliberately herded into the AI panopticon, where we are to be surveilled and controlled forever. Game over.

When the negative externalities of a technology far outweigh the private gains of its creators, the linear systems of our past (law, policy, ethics) simply shatter under the weight of exponential growth. The sad part is that most people think this is too crazy, so they just ignore it. But it’s happening right in front of us everyday, new breakthroughs and improvements daily. It feels like the scene from “don’t look up”. And our leaders are too old to understand AI or young naive technologists with wishful thinking “just make it maximally truth seeking and curious and humans are peak interesting so we should be fine” or “just align it, whatever that means” or “sure we are dooming, but better us dooming than china dooming us”. That’s the best you’ve got? Seriously? So guess I will just enjoy observing the last few years of beautiful human existence. It was great while it lasted, we really had it all! <3

People are seriously underestimating how thin our society's peaceful veil is. As AI envelops the nuts n bolts of productivity in the next few years, we're going to witness upheaval on a level that'll collapse governments. And we'll witness some governments try to cling to power via military violence. No amount of policy or UBI will put the genie back in the bottle when tens of millions suddenly have nothing to do, and all their alternative options have also been removed from the productivity landscape.
