Description

Achara & Michael react to Planet of the Apes (1968), the groundbreaking sci-fi classic that follows a group of astronauts who crash-land on a mysterious planet where intelligent apes rule over humans. As the survivors struggle to understand the world around them, the film unfolds into a thought-provoking story about civilization, power, and humanity itself, blending suspense, adventure, and social commentary into one of science fiction’s most iconic stories. This reaction stands out for its mix of classic sci-fi world-building, philosophical themes, and legendary twists, as Achara & Michael experience the film’s tension, atmosphere, and unforgettable moments in real time. Directed by Franklin J. Schaffner (Patton, Papillon, Nicholas and Alexandra, The Boys from Brazil, Lionheart), and based on the novel by Pierre Boulle (The Bridge on the River Kwai, Planet of the Apes novel, French literary works, war fiction, science-fiction literature), the film stars Charlton Heston (Ben-Hur, The Ten Commandments, Soylent Green, Omega Man, True Lies), Roddy McDowall (Fright Night, Cleopatra, Batman: The Animated Series, Overboard, A Bug’s Life), Kim Hunter (A Streetcar Named Desire, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Escape from the Planet of the Apes, Dark Shadows, Born Free), Maurice Evans (Rosemary’s Baby, Bewitched, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Androcles and the Lion, Planet of the Apes sequels), and Linda Harrison (Planet of the Apes sequels, Cocoon, Airport 1975, television sci-fi appearances, cult cinema projects), bringing together a cast tied to classic Hollywood epics, influential science fiction, and iconic genre storytelling that continues to drive strong reaction and crossover audience appeal. ___________________________________________________ We've got merch! The original Planet of the Apes films are a pillar of science fiction and the ending of this film is one of the greatest twists in cinematic history

1:00:00 Actually, the message of the movie was "Nuclear WAR bad", since that was what Taylor was implying when he said "You really went and did it".

Planet of the Apes came out 58 years ago, it touches on classism, human nature, religion, and slavery, and somehow manages to hold up, and still mirror our world in 2026.

I am old enough to have seen this when it first cane out. It was considered innovative, powerful, and somewhat revolutionary. I had no idea that he was in earth. The reveal was a definite "wow" moment. One of my all-time favorite classics.

Don’t forget when the movie was made American school children were doing drills for when the US was hit by a nuclear bomb. That’s why the ending was so blunt.

I was seven when this was in theaters, but I saw it on TV not long after. Had no clue that it was going to be on Earth, and the ending absolutely blew my mind.

The actor who played Cornelius, Roddy McDowell, was a well known character actor at the time. One of my favorite roles of his is in Fright Night (1985).

This movie is such a masterpiece. Granted, it’s a very dated for younger audiences, but older ones know how classic this movie is. It has a great story and iconic moments. Even if the title is pretty laughable, it’s still an iconic movie that’s still remembered for years and years to come.

For anyone that hasn't seen them yet ~ ' The Omega Man ' (1971) and ' Soylent Green ' (1973) are Rites-Of-Passage Charlton Heston classics 😉👍
