Going from a story about a dude admitting to killing a woman because she denied his sexual advances to a story about a man teaching more people to do what the last guy did really helps show how screwed up our world really is

It's a little difficult for me to believe someone is "born again" and "feels remorse" over the murder of a woman, while in prison in another country for the murder of a second woman, and to be brought back to the home country for ADDITIONAL charges of wire fraud and extortion.

I was a 15yo girl from Birmingham when Natalee went missing so I followed her case closely. Being so close in age and from the same area, it really shook me. No one I have ever spoken with who followed her case ever doubted it was Vandersloot, but I’m very thankful for her family to have real confirmed answers, even after all these years.

I used to work at a jail. That story doesn’t surprise me. I worked for a juvenile detention facility and eventually had to leave. I was called “too sensitive” for demanding “problem” children get fed when going through mental crisis situations. A lot of people that work in prisons are overworked and underpaid for the amount of work their doing. Many are working 16-18 shifts every single day. At my facility we hardly ever got a lunch break. My heart goes out to those in the prison system and those with big hearts that work there.

My son started asking if he could pack his own lunch when he was in 2nd grade. His school had a hot, free, lunch for all the kids, regardless of income. I didn't understand why he suddenly wanted to pack his own lunch other than it might be some kind of phase. So I let him pack his own lunch, which consisted mostly of a couple boiled eggs, carrots, cucumbers, and whatever fruit I had on hand. Then he forgot his lunch one day and I went to his school to give it to him. I actually saw what he was complaining about. EVERYTHING is prepackaged and so processed, there's no way it can be "nutritious." I've never questioned my son wanting to bring a lunch from home again.

My biggest issue with YouTube going after ad block is the fact that how can one even feel comfortable with their current ad program when it's currently filled with scams and malicious advertisements. Especially on content that is labeled "For Kids," do I see ads that can't even have their accounts verified. That isn't even an exaggeration! If you click on the little "i" for the ad's information, sometimes it just outright says that the sponsor for said ad isn't a verified account. Why the hell is YouTube airing ads from UNVERIFIED accounts in the first place?! It's just plain idiotic and dangerous!

As a girl growing up in Alabama, I cannot stress how much I and many others grew up with the Natalee Holloway story. Local news would play specials yearly on the anniversary and it was a local legend of being careful. I had friends who weren't allowed to go on senior trips because their parents were afraid their kids would be "another Natalee Holloway." The whole state has believed his guilt for years so this is crazy to hear in 2023

Former public defender here—what goes on inside of most carceral facilities would shock you, and what happened to Maurice Monk is readily believable to anyone who has seen the ins and outs of this system. I carry so many stories that sicken me to this day. It’s not about this one facility, or even a handful of them. State prison, county jail, juvenile detention—all of them are capable of this. And for every 0.5 Jordan Van der Sloots who (maybe) “get what they deserve” in there, we subject hundreds of Maurice Monks to those abhorrent conditions. This comment section is already filled with people who work, or have worked, in this system saying the same thing. On one hand, it’s comforting to know that I’m not crazy, but on the other it fills me with a kind of desperation I struggle to describe. So many of us see it, but it’s not enough. It’s going to take more than the people working in the system (or those who have been harmed by it) to effect change. Everyone needs to start paying attention and demanding better. And more people need to realize it’s not about funding, or training, or passing a law. We need radical change at all layers of this system. It’s not broken, it’s bad. The injustice is a feature, not a bug. I think the sooner we realize that, the sooner we’ll be able to do something about it.

I agree with Phil: it's absolutely insane that it's cheaper to pay politicians to agree with big food then it is for big food to change there school lunch ingredients.
