Hope everything is ok with JVL!
I posted this elsewhere but it bears repeating ...I worked in the nursery in a maternity unit in a very diverse community. I witnessed kind caring young couples who left their family and life behind in hopes of finding a better life for themselves and their children..They could have been from Central America, Asia, or the Middle East. I was there long enough to even see the next generation in which those desperate parents had earned the "American Dream", surprisingly remembered me, and now their baby was having a baby. They had learned English, paid taxes, held decent jobs (and in some cases, started their own business), and now were becoming grandparents. I was honored and privileged to be part of their lives. The crazy, hateful people who. sadly, are in charge should be forced to memorize the Emma Lazarus poem on the Statue of Liberty. It makes no stipulation about race ,religion or country of origin, and I refuse to let them steal my patriotism !
That’s not how I remember it. I was a kid but the bicentennial felt like a great big huge happy celebration to me.
Sarah, I was in my 30's in the Reagan years. He laid the groundwork for the corporate overtake of America. That's when the decision was made to weaken or downright ignore the antitrust laws. Eisenhour warned us about it, but he called it the military industrial complex. It's hard to ignore the throughline to current events. It's time for you and Bill to recognize that Reagan initiated much of the harm that the current iteration of the GOP is inflicting on the world.
As someone born in Mississippi in 1981 who has spent his entire life there in some way, shape, or form, I find it troubling when people like Sara Longwell wax poetic about Ronald Reagan, who campaigned against both the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act before touting states’ rights—we all know what that meant in Mississippi in 1980—at the Neshoba County Fair during his run for the presidency. His city-on-a-hill bullshit falls flat when viewed through the lens of what he was willing to do to Black Americans in service to racist whites. That type of amorality is character-defining. I fear people like Longwell are clueless to these emotions because she’s freedom-of-associationed herself out of knowing anyone who would counter the widely accepted narrative of Reagan and the ’80s.
I was 9. It was wonderful. This is SO sad.
praying for JVL and his family, hope everybody is good. Awaiting the return of that charming guy.
Reagan talked out of both sides of his mouth. He talked a big game about immigrants but his actions against POC says a lot more about him.
FUCK REAGAN! I left the Marine Corps, 2 weeks before his inauguration! He did hit his mark & memorize his lines, but the shit he inflicted on OUR country, are still being abusive today!
But Sarah - Reagan was not talking about people of color! Do you get that now?
