With the logic of private company suing over the student loan forgiveness, can average citizen sue for the extravagant amount of defense contracts that use our tax dollars, can we sue to get that back since that would cause irreparable harm to his/her financial income. The media seemed to never talk about that though.
Colleges need to be charged heavily and foot the bill for overcharging students not taxpayers but that makes too much sense.
Companies who avoid paying taxes have received multiple bailouts without a reversal or a backtrack being seriously discussed. Give money to a large majority of tax paying individuals and everyone freaksout. 🙄
I love how we just focus on the student loan debt relief, why don't everybody focus on the defense contract that is like a 100 times bigger than the student loan debt relief, and other wasteful government spending but no focus on the student loan debt relief. Low hanging fruit! And the media keep playing us for dummies, and we're feeding right today hands.
The student loan forgiveness only applies to loans held by the Department of Education. No private lender will have standing.
I wish the money to pay for student loan forgiveness would come out of the financial and college institutions that profited and contributed to this crisis, not the taxpayers.
The point about toxic debt is very important and not discussed often enough. Student loans cannot be discharged in BK like other debt.
Kinda goes back to what Saagar spoke about in a recent monolog. Reform the college system & how much tuition & boarding fees they can charge to students, while doing the loan forgiveness system.
The question of standing is not a trivial one. Demonstration of actual harm, not potential harm, is a tough hurdle.
*The interest won't accrue." REALLY?! Is that during deferrance and forbearance as well? I had loans from the mid 90s and the early 2010s which probably totalled $40k altogether. I couldn't pay them. I've always been poor so maybe I had no place trying to go but I loved to learn. I was newly out of an abusive marriage, had a 4 year old son to take care of and believed the lie that an education could lift me out of poverty. But, darn the luck, I became disabled and had to quit working in 1998. So I was deferring my loans as long as I could and then I used the forbearance option after that. Strangely, over time, that put my credit over the moon. In 1997, my credit was in the toilet... mid 500s, I think. In 2006 when I was trying to lease a car, a lady who checked my credit told me how disappointed she was that she had to deny me (debt-to-income ratio was shit. I'm poor with a lot of bills.) because I had an 800 credit score. NOT paying my loans without defaulting on them floated my credit score to the near-top. However, over the decades, the interest accrued to the point I owed over $60,000 to the department of education. Just last year, I was finally able to get my loans discharged because of permanent disability but most people don't have that option. I can't even fathom what my payments would have been with >$60,000 owing. Accrued interest can be a beast. To have that stopped would help people so much.
