1:27:08 I respect the podcast, But saying men no longer have to be protectors because of the police force... is the most domesticated thing I’ve ever heard. Outsourcing our basic instinct to the state, that’s how masculinity gets neutered.
So instead of focusing on the bullying, they made another men bad production?
30 years ago, people would have blamed heavy metal rock music. We laugh at that now.
Can you imagine if the tables were turned and you made a movie about women making false predatory accusations?
One thing to notice about Adolescence - every single "bad" character portrayed in the show is a straight, white man. Jamie (obviously), his friend who gives him the knife, the bully at school, the senior teacher who was more concerned about his school's reputation than the girl's death, the creepy guard in episode 3 who kept hitting on the psychologist... All straight white men/boys. There's a certain irony in the filmmakers doing that while trying to write a story which in it's essence is about young straight, white boys having no self worth and feeling alienated from and rejected by society.
My take away is adults need to be deeply involved in what our kids are doing online…..
The UK parliament having a discussion over a Netflix show is asinine AF
Hi Chris, I have just watched your pros and cons of 'Adolescence'. I loved hearing your feedback with the other guy (sorry forgot his name). Just wanted to say, I felt one part was overlooked by you both, maybe this might be because you don't have boys of this age, and are therefore a concerned parent thinking "wtf!! How can I prevent these atrocities??!!" As I am. But the dialogue between the husband and wife, in episode 4, they are blaming themselves and wondering how could they have created such a monster that is their son. The wife said she used to see her sons light on at 1am and she would ask him to turn it off, which he obliged, but would say nothing. All this dialogue and wonderment, then the wife says, "we should have done more." I think this is a very powerful message to all parents. Don't look the other way. Don't bury your head in the sand. Get involved with your kids and have conversations with them. Learn about what they are looking at online. Have controls of their viewing platforms, know who their friends are. If you think they are seeing / being sent the wrong messages then nip it in the bud. The earlier the better. They are still kids, and we are the parents, and we still need to guide them. It's not good enough to put a tool in their hand and then give them full access, it must come with boundaries. As a parent of a 14yo boy...I need to be a part of his life the real world and the online world, because he is still a child. I also see the huge importance in educating him to the dark side of grooming, online exploitation of children and all the bad stuff out there, so he is fully aware. I didn't want to educate myself of this, but as a parent, it is my duty to protect my son the best way I know how. I think Adolescence is sending an important message to parents. It's asking us to educate ourselves to all the topics that the series raises so we can educate our children and love them the best way we can. Thanks for listening to my rant 😄 Merryn (an Australian mum)
