Crying Mom Hit with New Charges After Girl’s Body Found in Box

An 11-year-old Connecticut girl, Jacqueline “Mimi” Torres, was allegedly starved, zip-tied, and abused to death, then hidden for nearly a year before her body was found in a container behind a vacant home. Her mother Karla Garcia, aunt Jackelyn Garcia, and her mother’s ex-boyfriend Jonatin Nanita are charged with murder and related crimes, with investigators alleging all three participated in the abuse and cover-up while repeatedly lying to police and child welfare authorities. Prosecutors have now added new charges against Garcia and Nanita, accusing them of fraudulently collecting SNAP benefits for Mimi months after police believe she had already died.
