One main purpose of preserving history is to learn and never repeat it. Well, so much for that.

As a child, the national archives was my favorite place in Washington DC because, I am totally blind and at least in the 90s there were a ton of push buttons where you could hear famous recordings. Then about two years ago, I had the occasion to visit the Library of Congress. They liked me there And took me underneath the library of Congress and brought out documents. Some of them going back to 1650, then George Washington’s copy Book from 1745, when he was 12 years old, his land surveyor‘s pocket notebook from before the revolution, and Walt Whitman‘s walking stick. They allowed me to freely handle all of those documents since I could not see them. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

My work involves filing and shredding millions of documents....to think I could be riding a bike to get to one end of the fileroom to the other is bananas 😮
