Greatest Mysteries of Gravity | Brian Greene & Kip Thorne
Kip Thorne: From Black Hole Theory to LIGO Discovery and Film Science
Trace the half-century journey from Einstein's initial concepts to Kip Thorne's Nobel Prize-winning work on gravitational waves and the visualization of spacetime extremes for Hollywood cinema.
Short Summary
- Confirmed the core predictions of general relativity by building LIGO, detecting collisions from distant black holes.
- Resolved fundamental paradoxes regarding horizons and singularities using powerful mathematical tools like differential topology.
- Insights derived from pure theory directly informed the creation of scientifically accurate visuals for complex phenomena in Interstellar.
- This discussion provides the messy, exhilarating human history of deep physics acceptance, detailing arguments with Einstein, Wheeler, and Oppenheimer.
The conversation documents key moments in gravitational physics, detailing the evolution of black hole theory following Schwarzschild’s solution and the decades-long quest to detect gravitational waves. Thorne emphasizes that progress often happens when older generations reluctantly concede ground to new mathematical insights, which eventually become standard vernacular. The narrative builds from theoretical understanding to the demanding experimental reality of the global LIGO collaboration.

Its an absolute privilege to listen to this. Thank you to you both.
Kip is 85 years old. If I get to 85 and I'm not drooling on myself, I'll count myself lucky.
Kip: "You're my grandson" Brian: "Grandpa!" What an wonderfully inspiring and friendly conversation. Thank you Brian, and Professor Kip Thorne.
So much respect for you great men.
Wow! Kip Thorne, what a treat! Thank you Dr. Greene and Thorne with the WSF team!
It is amazing to think that this man knew Oppenheimer and so many other great scientists. It was like looking at a bridge from Einstein to the present era. I also have to give props to Professor Greene. How many people in the world would have the vast knowledge to interview Kip Thorne and get all that information communicated in a brief interview ? I am a big fan of what Brian Greene has accomplished in communicating the wonder of physics to different levels of audience. This was really one of the greatest interviews I have ever witnessed and Kip Thorne is really a world treasure.
Prof. Greene wonderfully conducted this interview. Kip Thorne brought an amazing amalgam of esoteric technical knowledge and recent history of physics together for this momentous occasion.
Dr Greene has honed his interviewing skills; wonderful interview
Not only is Kip a legend in his own right, he's also an incredible bridge to the amazing physicists of the last few generations. What a privilege to be able to listen to this conversation.
What a lovely, curious and humble man. What I love is that Kip is so learned and can grasp these complex concepts so easily he will laugh at points while our (or my brain at least) is trying to catch up my understanding. What an amazing man. Thank you for this and thank you Kip for all your work and Interstellar. My favourite movie ever made. Really made my day stumbling on this. Great job Brian with the great questions, to keep the conversation flowing and to help us get a complete explanation on these topics, really helpful. Also loved the personal stories of the famous people he met over the years too.
