Tasked with teaching a class of rebellious students, Deloris discovers a hidden group of talented young singers and turns them into a choir capable of competing in a statewide music competition. Among the standout students is Rita Watson, played by Lauryn Hill (The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, The Fugees), whose powerhouse voice leads to some of the film’s most memorable musical moments — including the electrifying finale performance of “Joyful, Joyful.” The cast also includes Kathy Najimy (Hocus Pocus, King of the Hill) as the lovable Sister Mary Patrick and Maggie Smith (Harry Potter, Downton Abbey) returning as Mother Superior, once again reluctantly relying on Deloris’ unconventional methods.
