The definition of life: A limited-time offer with no warranty, billions of parts, confusing instructions, and very little customer support.
"The definition of life has been evolving"... I like that phrase !
i think your eagerness to learn so many things and share what you know in a simplified way that normal people can understand is amazing Anton. Glad to be a subscriber.
The universe continues to care naught for our human obsession with categorization.
Small correction (not that I am any kind of expert in the field). *Something* was known about genetics before DNA was discovered (Franklin, Watson and Crick 1953). Mendel was exploring recessive and dominant traits before 1863. Darwin had the concept of _pangenesis_ in 1868, a hypothesis which predicts key aspects of genetics. The term "genetics" was coined by William Bateson in 1905 with its first public usage a year later. Bateson co-founded the _Journal of Genetics_ with Reginald Punnett in 1910, so I assume they had something to write about. Just a minor nitpick on an otherwise excellent video.
It occurs to me, watching this, that perhaps debating viruses as "alive" or "dead" is the wrong perspective, like debating if a seed is alive or not, Perhaps we should look at viruses as the reproductive capsules of a cellular parasite, rather than the organism itself.
"The definition of life is still lacking" You're telling me scientific consensus has not yet accepted the definition given in Rüdisser et al. (1984): "Life is life (na na nanana)"?
I like microcosms definition. Life is the struggle agaisnt entropy.
It's amazing how quickly Anton can make comprehensive breakdown videos about recent science news. I expected him to be creating massive video backlogs with how much he uploads.
