What Happened When We Banned Cousin Marriage - The Times' Matthew Syed

The unfortunate, often severely disabled children of cousin marriages place a huge burden on health and social services too.

My close friend is a midwife in Bradford- many decades experience. She's delivered 5 sons with congenital heart problems over recent years to the same mother- results of a first cousin marriage. Trying to show compassion my friend said that she ( the mother) must be very worried/ upset to which the mother replied ' no, the NHS will fix him'. Previous 4 sons are still under specialist NHS care, new baby - emergency heart surgery. Neither parent has a 'working' income - all benefits. They are taking over our country and draining our NHS. This only 1 of many shocking examples.

Don't let anyone convince you that immigration is a "too late" problem.

Cousin marriage is banned in Norway, the ban was implemented 1.1.2025, better late than never😮

The thing is, it's not just one-off cousin marriages, but generations of this. It ain't healthy.

Culture does not mean it is moral.

I used to be a support worker looking after people with learning difficulties. 1/3 of them were Pakistan's who's parents were first cousin. They were "autistic" not inbreds. I had to leave. It literally costs the taxpayers billions. 😢

I respect Syed. His parentage means he can speak about cousin marriage, without being called a racist. It is shameful that neither Labour nor Tory have banned cousin marriage as it clearly leads to a clannish, inward looking mentality, and is inseparable from nepotism and corruption.

I had a colleague at Royal Mail who was married to his cousin. Three of his children were born with holes in their heart & all died. He also had one healthy daughter who married a white British man. The 'family' were furious. She had to flee the town because her life was in danger. It's incredibly messed up.
