Description

I read a story the other day about a guy who had become concerned that he was developing an unhealthy addiction to his iPhone. His name is Carlos Whittaker, and unlike me—another guy who has become concerned that he has developed an unhealthy addiction to his iPhone—Carlos wanted to see just how profound his addiction was. So, one day, Carlos left his phone at home and went off to live with Monks and Amish farmers for seven weeks. He went “cold turkey” in other words. Then, he wrote a book about it. Also, because Carlos is a curious kind of guy, he had some scientists scan his brain before and after he ditched his phone, just to see if there was some physiological evidence that his iPhone was turning him into a mental case. Turns out, there was. Carlos’s iPhone was making him unhappy, and Carlos is not alone. Millions of people are now addicted—not to their phones, necessarily—but to the feeling of control they perpetuate. The book is called Reconnected—How 7 Screen-Free Weeks with Monks and Amish Farmers Helped Me Recover the Lost Art of Being Human. I read it, and asked him to talk about why he wrote it, and how is life changed as a result. His answer is this week’s conversation, and I think it’s worth your time. Even if you watch it on your iPhone… #podcastshow #books #health My foundation is giving away $2.5 million in trade scholarships. Last Sunday my watch report said over 14 hours of screen time per day. Now before you get upset, a little background. I'm 74 years old, I live alone. I have no television or radio reception. And I listen to programs like yours while doing others things. It's my background noise and news source.

I was on FB for 2 years and listened to people I KNEW, being people they weren't. I then went to Twitter for 2 years listening to, Twitter. Sometimes informative, other times insanely divisive crazy talk. All the tech is great, but feel it's to the detriment of humanity. Give me a hug and some conversation over a BLT any day, the rest is basically bs 😁

I love where Carlos says people aren't "curious" about others' beliefs; unfortunately, we've all changed to judgement instead of that curiosity. This was so great. I agree with so much of this and didn't even realize it.

This has got me really thinking. So I’m giving up a at least 80% of screen time for 4 weeks. It’s a start. I sent this to my family.

There is a requirement for solitude for those of us who are introverts

I recently lost my phone while in the airport at the start of a business trip. Initially I was really stressed and anxious but my brain kicked in to 1980's mode. I wonder up enjoying the city I was visiting and was more engaged in the moment while on sightseeing tours. People at the conference I attended were blown away by how calm I was. I found ways to work around it and stay calm.

I loved this topic! I lived in a van for 2 years and began getting away from my screens very quickly. Not cold turkey like Carlos. I still have beautiful memories of my true sense of freedom. I used my phone as a camera and only checked in periodically, check-ins, which grew fewer and farther between naturally. My friends and family became downright offended and indignant with my lack of communication. But I had no use for social media, cities with its light and noise pollution, its crime, the crowds. I lived far removed out in the middle of whatever nowhere I chose to be that day or week. It was amazing! Right up there with my first ocean scuba diving experience. And that is saying a lot! I am blown away at the overwhelming feeling of the pressures and bs of the world slipping away every single time I dive.

"Study shows that you can't put the poop back in the goose." Mike is always so good with words. Also the drink I just sipped on magically transferred itself from my mouth onto the screen. Thanks, Mike! 😜😜😁😁
