Formative Years, Intellectual Betrayal, and Balancing The Bulwark’s Mission with Growth

Explore reflections on painful early career isolation and the surprising intellectual foundations that prepared leadership for today's fight, alongside the critical business dilemma of scaling a mission-driven outlet.

Short Summary

  • Leaders reveal that their most formative and intellectually challenging period involved deep personal loneliness rather than traditional career steps.
  • They acknowledge the central paradox: the worse the political climate gets, the more necessary and successful The Bulwark becomes.
  • The organization faces an immediate challenge: how to expand operational capacity without sacrificing the core intellectual mission that attracts its audience.

This unscripted conversation between JVL and Sarah Longwell steps away from daily news analysis to explore personal history and the future strategy of The Bulwark. Readers will gain perspective on the personal sacrifices made by the hosts and how those struggles directly inform their current commitment to diagnosing and combating threats to democracy.

Description

This week we did something we haven’t done on this show for a couple of years: We just . . . hung out and asked each other questions. Some stuff about life. Some stuff about The Bulwark. Some stuff about the world. Honestly it was just nice to be together. Hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed visiting with each other. Having gone to law school living today makes me feel disillusioned because I devoted my life to the law and now the law doesn’t matter or it only applies to some

This is such a thought provoking conversation. I so appreciate the work of The Bulwark and never miss a show. I think what you’re doing is meaningful. Makes me sad that JVL thinks he might have gone the wrong way. I think he’s where he needs to be. Hope I’m not being selfish.

JVL writing in present tense, is so incredibly brilliant, and to witness the worst of humanity, you bear witness to the future. And your work is bleak, but I appreciate it. I am a priest. I have seen the Christian faith transform from my ancestors leaving Virginia in 1838, and the Wesleyan faith over slavery, and Iowa was a Free State. I have gone through no women in the pulpits, to the Silent Majority, to W's Compassionate Conservative, to Christian Nationalists. Some days are harder than others, but I sit with trans kids, that have no legal Civil Rights in Iowa, and convince them they are worthy of love. You and Sarah are a blessing.

I was a moderate Republican for almost 52 years, I finally gave up when Trump got reelected, but most of the people I was behind, seems like they've gone to the dark side. Liz Chaney and Adam kinsinger and John Kasich are no longer in politics. I cannot believe Marco Rubio and Lyndsey Graham have been big disappointments . I cannot believe Republicans have gone back to Trump after he orchestrated Jan 6, 2021. And would have never believed that Republicans and those who supported Ronald Reagan would back this authoritarian administration that's leaning into facism,. Gues😮I will be voting for Democrats for the rest of my life, because, now, how can we support a Republican who backed the Trump administration?

It’s been crystal clear to me since I was a teenager that the regressive/repressive party has 2 goals: the protection and elevation of white, straight, “Christian”, conservative, able-bodied men and the oppression, control, and exploitation of everyone else. I will never not be utterly mystified that anyone who isn’t part of the former demographic or loves someone who isn’t could possibly devote their professional lives to championing said party
