Rogue Planet Discoveries and Atmospheric Analysis by JWST

Discover the surprising ubiquity of rogue planets and analyze recent James Webb findings revealing their bizarre, layered, metallic atmospheres.

Short Summary

  • Rogue planets (FFPs/PMOs) may outnumber orbiting planets 10:1 in the galaxy, suggesting frequent formation events.
  • New simulations propose they primarily form via violent interactions between protostellar discs, not just planetary ejection.
  • JWST revealed that rogue planets like SIMP J0136+0933 possess layered atmospheres composed of metallic gases and rocky minerals (like forsterite).
  • This robust evidence confirms rogue planets constitute a distinct class of celestial object, separate from stars or standard planets.

This discussion reviews initial definitions of these mysterious objects, explores a leading simulation for their origin involving interacting stellar nurseries, and details how JWST observations dissect the strange, rapidly rotating atmosphere of SIMP J0136+0933.

Iron clouds? Sand clouds? Auroras hot enough to be detected in IR? Magnetic field stronger than Jupiter? What an interesting if not somewhat hellish place...world...celestial object?! It's too bad we lack the means to just 'pop over' to these 'objects' for an up close look! James T. Kirk, where are you and your 'Enterprise'?!

So incredible we're finding new classes of planet-like objects.

I appreciate how, probably everything out there could prove to be much weirder than we think it is, but simultaneously, as a field of science, astronomy tries to go from knowns into those unknowns. Like I wonder how many facts would go out the window if we had a probe in one of these systems

I think there are trillions of rogue planets free floating and moving around in the vastness of interstellar space in galaxies as well our own. We will find it shocking in the type of rogue planets that will eventually be discovered.

Makes me think of Space 1999. Otherwise.. wow, Star Trek needs to show that travelling through space is like crossing a street during rush hour.

I like the idea of Dubious Planetary Objects. Clearly they all play in a band.
