Congressional Strategy and Fixing Sports Streaming Chaos

Congressman Pat Ryan shares how recent Democratic wins signal a mandate for change and outlines his legislative push to stop massive sports broadcasting blackouts that affect everyday fans.

Short Summary

  • Recent election results offer a "resounding message" favoring authentic, change-oriented candidates who focus on kitchen-table issues.
  • The path to retaking the House requires aggressive execution in hard, newly leveled districts, focusing on locally rooted candidates favored by the base.
  • The proliferation of streaming services exemplifies broader economic problems driven by vertical integration and corporate disputes, demanding Congressional guardrails.
  • Ryan introduced the Stop Sports Blackouts Act, which mandates refunds for subscribers when technical disputes sideline paid content.

This discussion pairs post-election analysis regarding the Democratic primary strategy—emphasizing fighting elites and consumer costs—with a highly tangible issue: the dysfunctional state of sports broadcasting. Both topics highlight voter frustration with corporate power, signaling that legislative action on pocketbook issues remains crucial for electoral success.

All these teams demand public funds for stadiums and then take the games from the public airwaves. Disgusting!

Tim! My rep, Juan Ciscomani, AZ-CD06, has never done a town hall. His opponent, Jo Mendoza, is a 20-year Marine Corp Vet. Jo is everywhere! She's done a bunch of town halls, out with us Vets at our local VA, protesting cutbacks, she's great! You should get her on the Bulwark.

My husband is an hourly wage worker: people have no idea how infuriating the sports blackout issue is. It is insane that the average person can’t watch the game without a $150 monthly subscription. And yes, we’ve tried it all. It’s depressing and is a vital community bond that has been broken. And it shows in our politics.

As for sports, I got tired of trying to find my sports teams to watch, so screw those companies. I left them entirely. Boycott until they make it right.

When Tim suggested it's just Kamala states and NYC, I think Pat Ryan's disagreement is correct, in that if you zoom in to local races, there was a massive swing left. Here in Utah, I noticed a Trump +13 in '24 town (Cottonwood Heights) just elected a Dem mayor. But I'm (stupidly) forever an optimist, so don't listen to me 😅

Boy do I agree that sports shouldn't be locked behind a paywall. I love ice skating and it's now mostly unavailable to fans unless you shell out for a subscription to Peacock. These kids work so hard to get to the top of their sport. Sports should be available to everyone who wants to watch.

We need some serious antitrust enforcement. There has been way too much consolidation and now everything feels like a ripoff or a scam.
