Bizarre Rapid Evolution of the Spirograph Nebula (IC 418)

Discover how 130 years of observation revealed a star drastically altering its temperature faster than expected, challenging long-held theories of stellar death.

Short Summary

  • Scientists tracked the IC 418 star's heating rate over a century, finding temperature spikes previously thought to take millennia.
  • The rapid evolution creates a "carbon star paradox," contradicting models based on observed carbon abundance.
  • This research offers the first direct insight into how planetary nebulae evolve within a human observation window. This video details the bizarre speed of IC 418's changes and highlights why historical telescopic data is crucial for modern astronomy, showing the universe changes faster than we often assume.

About a century ago, Edwin Hubble took his famous images of M31 that showed the Cepheid's. Now, the Sun has travelled about 0.1 light years around the Milky way, and we should be able to do some parallax measurements of the bright stars in that Galaxy. What kinds of things could we learn from that astrometry work?
