As a musician i can tell you the art scene has become one giant group circlejerk. The constructive criticism that was used to help eachother develop has been ostracized. Its all now one hodgepodge of mediocrity.
When I look back at the last 40 years of post-modernist art I feel cheated. Art has become a money laundering machine for the rich who have little taste.
Yes, being an artist for 68 years, I've seen the fine arts go to hell in a very short time.
I've supported myself solely as an artist and have done so since the late '90s. Artists today do nothing but scream the talking points of MSNBC and it is disgusting. They are no longer artists but parrots.
Art scam in steps 1. Take one talentless artist 2. Produce 'art' 3. Art critic X says how great they are, art drones follow slavishly. 4. Art purchaser pays Y for 'art' 5. Art valuer says art is great quoting art critic X and says value is Y times 2 or higher. 6. Art purchaser donates art to Prestigious Gallery. 7. Art purchaser writes the Y times 2 as a loss against other income 8. Artist, critic, purchaser, valuer and friends snort all the money they've made 9. Repeat
My wife started a non-woke art community that consists of artists that were cast out from the community for not peddling the “current thing” woke bullshit like trans or gay or whatever, and holy crap the amount of people who surged into the community is insane. It blew the eff up. Artists are done with this exclusionary “inclusion” wave thats hit every facet of american life, and there are gay people and trans people in the community who are just done with being shoehorned onto a pedestal and JUST want to be left alone like everybody else.
I was a punk kid 25 years ago but would never call myself punk now because nothing is more unpunk than the whiny poser punks of today.
I went to art school at 17. Went to a gallery opening with our class and realized this was not a world I wanted to be part of. My dreams were smashed by looking at my mediocre art teachers. But I thought there was something wrong with me. I spent 20 happy years in book design, less pretentious. Now I am back at painting and doing my own humble thing and seeing their fake world falling down.
True artists don't care about social status or being accepted by the popular crowd.
