*Cool things that had to be sadly cut from the film:* 1) Rocky is 291 years old and his race can live up to 689 years, and Rocky was sadly alone on his ship for 46 YEARS, so Rocky was already alone on that ship before Grace was even born! And his people, as seemingly far more advanced than humanity, did not know about other things humans knew about such as radiation and relativity. So he didn’t know that because his ship had traveled to Tau Ceti faster than they had theorized, and because they were nearing light speed, time for them moved slower than back on their home world. 2) Grace was given the amnesiac drug because Eva Strat knew that Grace by nature would want to finish the mission and help save the world. Because after Stratt told him he was going he was threatening to sabotage the mission out of spite, so by wiping his memory of being forced into doing this mission he would be completely dedicated to completing the mission. 3) In order to breed enough Astrophage to make enough fuel to reach Tau Ceti, most of the Sahara desert was actually turned into a solar powered breeding ground, also in order to buy enough time for the Hail Mary to complete its mission and send its findings back, the governments of the world actually had to nuke Antarctica in order to release enough trapped methane gas to create enough greenhouse gases to warm the Earth long enough for the Hail Mary crew to complete their mission. It’s actually a very heartbreaking scene in the books because the idea is proposed by a scientist who devoted his entire life to fighting human made climate change, and is now using that same knowledge to essentially endanger the planet while saving it. 4) There are a couple chapters where Grace and Rocky seriously struggle with the Taumoeba. 1) Because it’s actually much harder for them to breed nitrogen resistant strains of it, and 2) it actually escapes containment, gets into the Hail Marys fuel tanks, and consumes all of the Astrophage leaving them dead in the water. So Grace has to go inside the tanks, clean them to the point where they’re completely sanitized, then breed more Astrophage from the fuel reserves that were for the beetle drones. And using said drones to push their ship to Rocky’s ship. Then Rocky uses the Xenonite to make Grace new fuel tanks to replace the ones he had to eject back on Adrian. Oh, and in case you’re wondering why Mary’s estimate for the return trip to earth was only going to be just over four years, that’s the time for him and the ship. Fun physics lesson: The closer you approach light speed, the slower time moves for you but everything else around you goes at its regular pace. So the ship is moving so fast that it more than halves the time for him. That’s Einstein’s theory of relativity. Oh, and for me, my favorite Rocky line is “Hello Grace….Hello Grace Friend”🥹🥰
When Rocky entered our atmosphere to save grace, he basically set himself on fire but from the inside out. Rocky is a real one.
If the aliens ever come, I wouldn't mind if Ryan Gosling was our representative during the first contact.
*HUGE EASTER EGG!* If you look at Eva Stratt’s neck when you first see her in the final scene of the movie when she’s old, you can see she has a present tattoo of a V with a line across it. This is a European tattoo which means life without parole. The reason, that sadly only was hinted out in the book but never alluded to at all in the movie, is because when she was the head of Project Hail Mary she was given an enormous amount of authority from all of the governments of the world to do what needed to be done to complete the project, whatever it took. But in doing so she circumvented or even broke several international laws which she was originally told she could do with impunity. But at the end of the book when she’s about to say goodbye to Grace before he’s sedated and put in a coma, she says that she believes that after a few years, the governments of the world will turn on her and use her as a sacrificial scapegoat. So one of the directors Phil Lord's explanation there is that people on earth weren't cooperating, and at some point, the governments turned on Stratt and "dragged her before a criminal court," which resulted in her being sentenced to life in prison. So, the Stratt we're seeing at the end of the movie is a woman who's since escaped and is still trying to save the world. As alarming as that may sound, book-readers may remember that this was pretty much the outcome Stratt predicted aloud when talking to Grace before he’s sedated and put into his coma, he asks Stratt whether or not she’s concerned about that to which she says “We all have to make sacrifices. If I have to be the world's whipping boy to secure our salvation, then that's my sacrifice to make”. And they also implied that she was broken out of prison by people from the original project who were loyal to her and knew she did nothing wrong. And it’s my prediction that since the project saved the world, she could come out of hiding, and the governments of the world would have to be forced by overwhelming public pressure to give her a pardon and apologize to her publicly. If they didn’t, then they absolutely would be overthrown.
Trip from Earth took 13 years from Earth's perspective. 4 years from Grace's. Total round trip was 27 years Earth time. About 9 from Grace's perspective.
This is Ryan Gosling‘s best performance of his career. Not only is it’s a truly phenomenal performance in its own right. But it’s also the exact opposite of almost every character type he is best known for playing. He’s not the super cool, hunky, charismatic, sometimes stoic leading man. He’s a little cowardly, he’s awkward, he’s chatty, and he’s an open book. When you read the book, Ryan Gosling is actually the last guy you would expect Dr. Ryland Grace to look or even act like. But Gosling actually nails it!
This film does a phenomenal job of making you fall in love with a character who doesn't even have a _face._
Grace didn't love anyone enough to go but he loved Rocky enough to never return.
If Rocky hadn't given Grace the astrophage, Grace would not have had any fuel to go save Rocky/Erid.
Rocky stayed awake through the pain to watch Grace sleep so he could protect him
