It begins by explaining why ether seemed necessary in the 1800s: since sound waves need air and ocean waves need water, scientists assumed light waves also needed some medium. This “luminiferous ether” had to be everywhere, invisible, extremely rigid, and yet intangible enough for planets to move through it without resistance — a strange combination, but useful mathematically. #aether The turning point came with the 1887 Michelson-Morley experiment, which tried to detect Earth’s motion through the ether by measuring differences in light’s speed in different directions. The experiment found no such difference, producing the most famous null result in physics and undermining the ether idea. This removed the need for a preferred frame of rest, which a classical ether would have provided. Later, general relativity showed that space itself is not empty or passive.
