My dad, a skeptic tested the giveaway. He bought a subscription through PCH. The entry envelopes provided were yes and no order. Dad cut a check to buy a subscription to a magazine but put it in the no purchase envelope, his thought was if the give away were legit they would send the check and order to the correct department and if those who wouldnt buy a magazine were asking to be entered their request would be trased in the no sub envelope. Needless to say dad thought PCH was a scam. Considering his check never was cashed, and no subscription arrived, it was pretty much a given the order, check, and the no order placed envelope went directly into the trash, without being opened nor entered into any giveaway.
Don't forget the story of the McDonald's Monopoly game, where the head of security was giving/selling prizes to friends and family.
In the 80s, while attending a university, I tried to get my dad to order magazines so we could have "an edge" to winning. My dad's response was so classic. "If I put the money to buy the stamp in a jar for every entry, I'll be richer than winning."
My husband and I were poor as church mice and used to lay in bed and dream about winning the PCH sweepstakes. We fell asleep in the rosy glow of possibility. Little did we know that reading our magazines and dreaming about being rich was diversion enough to make our difficult situation somewhat tolerable.
I remember growing up, mom would always enter the PCH sweepstakes, subscribing to Readers' Digest and TV Guide...I recall her talking about what she would do if she won and we'd all laugh together...I miss those days and I miss mom. 🙏❤
A movie? A miniseries? A documentary? A fictionalized account? I'd watch them all, and watch them 3 or 4 times.
So enjoyable and Mike Rowe’s voice was made for this!
This interview reminds me of my stepdad, he bought every book that readers digest ever put out, and there were many, because he thought it increased his chances of winning their sweepstakes, great interview, Mike
Grocery stores selling shelf space and using a membership ID to track customer spending uses same concept to get more customers. Coupons as well.
Mike my name is Will Jordan I'm Adam Jordan's uncle he told me how he enjoyed working with you I told him how much I enjoyed your TV series dirty jobs just thought I would toss that in lol. Great interview I love the idea of a movie if you can push it I think it would be fantastic .This would be a good one for Ron Howard to make . Anyway it was a great show I enjoyed it he was a very interesting character
