The ultimate guide to AEO: How to get ChatGPT to recommend your product | Ethan Smith (Graphite)
Mastering Answer Engine Optimization (AEO): Beyond Traditional SEO Tactics
Capture immediate, high-intent traffic by optimizing content to appear in LLM answers like ChatGPT. Learn why AEO leads convert six times better than standard Google search traffic.
Short Summary
- AEO traffic converts 6x better than Google search traffic, creating immediate high-value lead opportunities.
- Early-stage startups can win quickly in AEO, unlike the years required for traditional SEO authority building.
- The focus shifts from ranking single URLs to maximizing mentions across multiple underlying citations feeding the LLM.
- Success relies on rigorous experimentation, authentic user contributions, and strategic citation building across platforms.
Ethan Smith defines AEO as optimizing content to appear in LLM answers, noting this transition is the second-biggest shift in search history. This guide details how to generate high-ROI visibility by understanding citation mechanics, mastering the larger "long tail" questioning structure of AI chat, and avoiding the pitfalls of creating repetitive, AI-generated spam.

We’ve been doing AEO for a while now and I think two things worth focusing on: - there’s not enough research to show what actually works. The 3rd party off-site optimization and the SEO is pretty clear, but besides that, it’s mostly guesses if you don’t track back what works. And it seems that different industries work very different for AEO. - the prompt research is very misleading when using an AI visibility tool. Those tools will suggest prompts based on your content, with little to no relation to what your audience is actually searching. DO NOT use these tools as a baseline for your optimization. Do proper research.
The clearest takeaway for me was that AEO is less about “ranking first” and more about citation density across trusted surfaces like YouTube, Reddit, and authoritative content. The distinction Ethan made between head vs long-tail questions and RAG-driven citations was especially useful. This aligns closely with what we’re seeing while working on AI-search visibility for Shopify and BigCommerce stores at SEOKart. Early wins are coming more from topical coverage, help-center depth, and off-site mentions than classic keyword chasing. Very practical and timely discussion.
Excellent pod - I've been around SEO/SEM long enough that I still have gifts that Google used to send out at x-mas and Overture was still a thing. The ground-shift has been amazing to watch.
Stoked for this one!!
Everything is clear. Brief and clear. No water. Thank you)
Just watched this video/podcast. Loved it. So many actionable tips on AEO. LIKE’d and subscribed. 👍🏼🙏🏼
Clear and understandable, I wish there was more information like this.
This podcast was phenomenal. So many gems. And Lenny, great work on the questions. Every time I was confused about something, you hit Ethan with the perfect follow up question. Maybe you will be a master of AEO muahahaha!
The citation density point Ethan makes around 6:30 is spot on. I've been analyzing how different AI models pull sources for answers and the patterns are pretty consistent - it's all about appearing in multiple authoritative contexts.
Fantastic video, really appreciate your effort!
