Integrating RNA World and Thioester World Hypotheses for Abiogenesis

Discover how recent experimental evidence integrates the RNA World and Thioester World hypotheses, moving us closer to explaining the origin of life through chemical self-assembly.

Short Summary

  • Thioesters provide the necessary energy currency to link amino acids to RNA, solving a key energy deficit.
  • A landmark UCL study demonstrated selective peptide formation occurring spontaneously in neutral water conditions.
  • Droplet world experiments show self-reproducing coervate structures forming via liquid-liquid phase separation.
  • New evidence establishes a plausible pathway connecting simple chemistry (thioesters) directly to early biology (RNA/peptides).

This discussion outlines pivotal historical theories like the RNA World Hypothesis and its energy constraint. We then explore groundbreaking recent work, focusing on how thioesters powered the synthesis of early peptides and RNA under plausible early Earth conditions, bridging chemistry to biology.

Small clarification: this only explains what probably happened up to a protocell that was able to mimic basic functions but still doesn't explain how the actual living cell formed. We'll discuss this more in the next video. Also if you enjoyed this, check out a somewhat relevant video here from last year: https://youtu.be/Xs0le5NxmW4

You are absolutely one of the very few people I trust to learn information about science and space. My favorite teachers told me to never stop learning and I'm glad I listened to them. Thank you for taking the time and energy to make videos like these.💖

I graduated from high school in 1961, before plate tectonics, DNA, and the chemistry and biology described in this video. Some of this hadn't made it into my early college classes. I hadn't heard of thioesters until this video. We have to keep learning!

As a researcher in the LLPS field it was a bit shocking to see it covered! Thanks for sharing some of the field with the public.
