It's no mystery that a lot of American expats are former military, who had already lived outside the USA and even faced danger as the result of US policy. That experience certainly opened my mind to other ways of living and doing things ... and also gave me a lot more restraint about supporting throwing military might around the world.

We are very much trading freedom for security in the EU and as predicted I fear we will have neither in the future. State is getting too involved in the daily lives of its citizens, legislation, regulation etc. They mask it by not regulating the people overtly but instead by regulating the businesses you use for daily lives. From what we have on our phones via the AppStore’s, what medications you have access too via doctors health insurance providers, things like that. Society is getting more an more polarised as well even on obvious stuff that used to have a consensus.

For a long time, I believed the West was the "freest" place to live — but after living there for close to 20 years, and then after spending time in other parts of the world, things started to look different. Glenn makes a great point: freedom isn't just about what’s written in law — in many Western countries, the control feels more subtle, but that doesn’t make it any less real. No place is perfect, but it’s clear now that the West doesn’t have a monopoly on freedom or good governance. There are other places where you can get similar outcomes, without the Western price tags. Thanks for sharing this — it’s a conversation more people need to hear.

Consultancies are the most common form of corruption. There’s so often a lot of kickbacks that don’t show up on any accounts. And it’s not in cash but in crypto. You can’t be seen with that much cash.
