That's why some people get them for a bit of shrapnel and others survive an IED blast and don't get shit. Depends on how well your NCO/CO write and if they even bother. Also at least for the Army it's 180 days of service for veteran status. Anything less than that is called "glossary non-prior service." AR 601-210 And anyone with a military ID can shop at the commissary, active, Guard, Reserve, retired, disabled vet, dependent. If you have someone on base with a visitor pass without ID they can buy consumable items that don't contain alcohol or tabacco. (They can get lunch at the food court.)
