We have 3 generations living together in our home. We also have no debt because of it. It benefits all of us and allows my aging mother to be at ease knowing that she will not have to go into a retirement home.
Living in the same home with your parents and grandparents out of desire and with enough space is a good thing. Doing it in a tiny home with no space out of necessity is not a good thing.
This works for NON dysfunctional families. I'd rather live in a tent than with my relatives.
They call it multigenerational homes, I call it not being able to move out
This is why I hate that "stop living in your mother's basement" comment that is used so much. Like which is worse, struggling to pay bills month to month and not eating healthy or living with parents, being able to live comfortably and be there to help your parents simultaniously.
Rich people- oh my god its a crisis! Poor people- when did we ever STOP doing this?
This would be particularly difficult for people who have abusive parents. Unfortunately, not everyone has a loving family.
It was Boomerism that made it the norm to kick your kids out of the house at 18 and dump your grandparents into a nursing home at 65. Extended families should be the norm--though I agree, it should be by choice not forced.
This is very common in Latin Culture. Not because of money, it’s because we don’t put our parents into nursing homes
