I picked up my 2026 R last weekend, still in the honeymoon phase and have yet to push it since it is still breaking in. Didn’t get the Euro spec like he’s showing, so I have leather seats and moon roof, but I love this car. Everything works so well together. Plenty of space, I’m 6’3” and sit very comfortably. No one can really sit behind me but that doesn’t matter as this car is very driver focused. Glad I bought this as my midlife crisis car :)
Just sold my 2017 Golf R. It was fantastic. Extremely well built car, and an absolute rocket. Ill miss it.
We need the golf station wagon back in North America again
I love this man doesn’t address himself a technician, or some other cool and trendy modern term…he calls himself an automotive mechanic. That’s a true badge of honor. Best automotive viewer on YouTube, hands down.
This is a serious review.
My 2018 R now has 310,000km on it. The comments regarding the DSG not being smooth in stop and go traffic is puzzling. This is not my experience. In Normal or Eco mode you would never know it was a Dual-Clutch Unit. But, the water pump housing being plastic and a problematic area was spot on. I've gone through 2 of them. Other than the above issue, I've followed the maintenance schedule as defined by VW. Except Oil changes. I limit those to 10,000km. The car is still going strong.
My wife asking me "what have you learned watching this?" Me "Its a pretty serious car"
Years ago I had a manual VW Rabbit (Golf). Bought it for $500 bucks. Was in BC Canada at the time. Drove that thing everywhere. Great fuel economy, fun to drive and quirky German. Fell out of tune constantly. Heating controls were different back then. And I noticed that every time I cleaned the car there was this stuff on the floor. And the seat kept getting thinner. One day at my mechanics I asked him about it and he said. "Oh thats horse hair. Germans used pressed glued horse hair for the seat pads. And now it's disintegrating." And sure enough it eventually fell right apart and I had to put a pillow under the seat cover. lol. Loved VW ever since. Totally quirky, and totally fun.
The Akrapovic exhaust is part of a $3,700 Euro upgrade that includes the seats. I shopped the WV R (2024) against a Mercedes GLA45 (2021) and ended up going with the GLA for the engine and drivetrain (it's a beast!). Great review as always!
Picking my white 2026 black edition up tomorrow at 5pm 😁😁😁😁 To follow up with my Purchase this car is incredible. I am 56 my wife is 57 and this car has made us teenagers again. I put 18" winter tires and rims in it and man does it stick to the road like glue in the snow. The suspension dampening seems to completely change the car. In comfort mode it feels like my Honda Passport nice and soft and smooth. But put it in sport/track mode its very aggressive. We have a Black edition in White with the same seats and the Akro exhaust and we have the sunroof, which is not available in the US with the euro package. I paid $66K CDN$ with 5% tax included. When i build this same car on VW USA it equals out to $79K CDN$. So the high pricing on these in the USA are related to the Tariffs, as my car was $13K CDN ($9500 U$) cheaper and it came with the sunroof. Yep you can buy something used for the same money but...I have always wanted a Golf GTI since i was a broke ass Soldier stationed in Germany. But living in western Canada, the AWD makes a big difference in winter. Yep you can get by i did with a Mini Cooper S but it was a real chore getting around some days. The price difference was maybe $15K up here in canada for the R and GTI. But once my wife sat in this she was telling the sales guy to put a sold sign on it. She loves driving it around town, and she actually loves the jerkiness of the transmission. She says if i want smooth i get in the Passport. She says i drive this because it throws and bounces me around a little, it reminds me that i can leave everyone in the dust from the lights. Like i said "it makes us feel like 2 teenagers" there ain't too many cars left that will do that anymore for under $100K and still fold the seats down for shopping....
