Answering Questions About Our Flat Universe, If the Milky Stopped Rotating & More
Cosmic Queries: Exploring Gluons, Groovy Time, and Galactic Collapse
Discover how the fundamental forces are characterized, why sci-fi often gets time wrong during interstellar travel, and what keeps our Milky Way galaxy from plunging into its central black hole.
Short Summary
- Differentiate between massless photons and massive force carriers like gluons and gravitons using $E=mc^2$.
- Confirm that time understanding aligns with our 24-hour circadian rhythm, which aliens should respect for effective communication.
- Calculate the true size of the entire asteroid belt if compacted (significantly smaller than previously assumed).
- Understand that the universe is currently thought to be flat, meaning travel in a straight line does not lead back to the origin.
- Evaluate the implications of stopping galactic rotation: everything falls toward the central black hole.
This segment tackles diverse physical concepts, from particle physics and quantum mechanics (Casimir Force) to cosmology (universe shape and galactic dynamics). It provides clear, expert interpretations of fan questions, grounded in established physics principles, while debunking common science fiction tropes regarding time and extraterrestrial interaction.

Who here likes pineapple on their pizza?
Who likes to hear them talk while peacefully sitting or laying enjoying to hear the wonders of the universe ?
i cant imagine this show without chuck, what an absolute gift he is.
I don't care how many times Chuck does his galactic gumbo voice, it is great every time. Don't stop.
It’s crazy how smart Chuck has become. He’s explaining the questions to Neil when he doesn’t understand them. He’s the avatar, the bridge between the two worlds of layman and scholar.
I wish more people were as excited about space as Chuck gets
Please keep Chuck on the show, he is half the reason we watch. It sounds like he's being phased out for other guest co-hosts.
theyve been saying we used to call it galactic gumbo for every grab bag for the last 5 years
Alien: "we'll be back in 86,400 heartbeats!" Human: "that's... a day! We have time to consider their threat" Intelligent mouse: "that's less than 2.5 hours! We have to do something now!"
I started listening to star talk two years ago after a teacher recommended that I look more into physics. I can now proudly say that I'm starting a physics degree in 2 weeks. I truly wouldn't have pursued an education in physics without star talk. I even wrote about it in my personal statement 😂.
