The mother solidified two social rules: 1st, lethal action to protect is good; 2nd, "you're a good boy, it was just an accident" (we will not call it protection, we will call it an accident because we must lie about our lives and our motives). Furthermore, real emotions were suppressed: anger, shock, complete disintegration of one's role in the world, etc. And even further, his mother used a narcissistic control loop, herself: "What do you think happened just now? No, that's not what happened. I'll tell you what happened."

Do i think the last 2 seasons kind of butchered Joe? Yes. Is this analysis still an absolute banger that made me consider rewatching the series with new insights? Absolutely

In the book series, Joe is much darker and less charming. The tv series deviates from the books after series 3, but Penn Badgley does a great job portraying him. Just the right amount of charm to pull you in, and slowly reveals his true self , by which point it is too late for those involved with him to escape.

11:04 giving up his son was the best thing Joe ever did. And it was done in a (very rare) moment of self-awareness about how broken he is and how he would ultimately end up severely damaging his child. That is one instance in which he was in fact being a good guy. Taking him back was another story.

I've watched You twice now and it never occurred to me how Joe only married the rich "love" interests. That was a cool realization you gave me bro. I'd like to add I think it's because they are more fantastical and fit his hero/protagonist narrative. Beck is low class to him, normal is disappointing to Joe no matter how he much he says he values the mundane compared to their peers. Marianne, I think reminds him too much of his mom. That reaction he had towards Paco's mom about being a bad mom and crap, I think Joe would eventually have had a more violent reaction towards Marianne if he ever went all the way through her. Cool vid. Lowkey wanna watch You for the third time now.

The entirety of this video was spectacular! Most people try to pin Joe as blameless and traumatized when in reality he is a narcissistic ego manic. This video really gave support on why this man is dangerous and deluded. His monologue comes off charming but it’s all just the same… he will kill for YOU, kill YOU and control YOU.
