The Frustrated Engineer: Why AI Coding Tools Fail to Deliver Enjoyment and Predictability
Discover the deep friction points encountered when reliance on Large Language Models (LLMs) erodes engineering predictability and intrinsic joy, leading one developer to take an intentional step back.
Short Summary
- Rejected the dogma that ignoring current AI workflows means professional obsolescence; core programming skills remain transferable in weeks, not years.
- Highlighted that the stochastic nature of LLMs conflicts directly with the logical requirements that make programming satisfying.
- Confirmed that current AI usage often shifts developer effort toward writing documentation, configuration, and validation bureaucracy.
- Announced a one-month hiatus from AI coding tools to reconnect with the enjoyment derived from manual problem-solving.
This discussion breaks down the speaker’s intense frustration with current AI coding tools, detailing specific failures related to consistency, predictability, and developer satisfaction. Readers will gain context on why forcing structure (via detailed configuration files or agents) often fails and how these methods distract from deep conceptual understanding.

Instead of communicating with computers in English, maybe we should come up with some sort of dedicated language to deterministically control computers. Like some sort of "programming language" if you will.
My personal opinion about it is: We are always looking for shortcuts, and I realized that every time in my life I decided to take the shortcut that everybody is taking it ends up being a trap where I literally had to start from scratch again. I already lost A LOT of money because of that. So I learned from my mistake and now while I see a bunch of people saying they’re 10x faster at coding because of AI, I just think good for you, I’ll keep grinding, trying to actually understand what is happening, because every time I didn’t I regretted.
i prompted "What's the current time", it replied : "Good question, EXCELLENT QUESTION".
My boss wants to use Ai to rebrand a legacy system . Needless to say , I have job security now
This is basically what dijkstra said about the non-technical person’s obsession with programming through natural language: natural language is imprecise, we shouldn’t want to do this in the first place
Only if there was a way to tell a computer exactly what you want it to do, maybe AI will help power this.
I buy Claude dinner first, that way he feels obliged
The problem is that non-technical business leaders get a huge dopamine hit when they vibe code something.
My AI girlffriend said that I shouldn't listen to Prime and that I should by all AI products made by the company. Sorry, Prime.
