Alignment is not a function of clock rate. Imagine you have a Jupiter brain, and the ability to scale the brain's clock-rate up and down. This is close enough to being able to scale the speed of light in the gedanken to enable this argument: A properly functioning digital computer with a low speed of light will arrive at the same result (configuration) as a computer with a high speed of light -- it will just take longer. The alignment (or lack thereof) will be the same.

Biological material in aliens? The supposition is obvious: Carbon is ultimately better at some things than the other semiconductors, and the use of flesh has been (genetically?) engineered into the probe.

Thanks Dr. Brian, very interesting as usual. Personally, I think that for any long distance space flight, (i.e. interstellar), even at relativistic velocities, Silicon based intelligence would be far more appropriate and suitable, than Carbon based, (biological), intelligence. If Human civilisation should ever become multi-planetary within the Solar System, the first interstellar craft to be built and sent on a light-years long journey, would surely be an advanced AI probe of some kind. If Penrose’s Orch OR is correct, then consciousness would depend on quantum coherence of microtubiles. If quantum coherence is a fact than in extrememis it may be that at the heart there is a form of entanglement between all mircrotublies of all homanoids anywhere which would collectively define humans proto consciousness. Mind you in the QP world, time is not the clock, mass is (hf=mc2). So regardless how late in the game humaoids formed on earth, in the QP collective it has always been there. If this indeed is the setup them we would need tech probes to distribute and deliver anywhere CHNOPS based embryonic DNA, able to adept to local CHNOPS based conditions. But ultimately able to grow new humanoids and collect experiences. So humans are the von Neuman machines indeed…

They are from inside the earth. Mineral based world builders with companion humanoid breeds. It's much more plausible.
