Description

Neil deGrasse Tyson, world-renowned astrophysicist, says science hasn’t stalled at all — we’re just too close to the progress to notice it. What you think is “no breakthrough” could actually be the fastest era of discovery in human history. Neil deGrasse Tyson is an astrophysicist, author, and one of the most influential science communicators of our time. We cover: why people falsely believe science is stagnant, what’s actually changed since 1989, why AI already runs your daily life without you noticing, and the discoveries (from exoplanets to black holes) that quietly rewrote reality. Science didn’t slow down — you just stopped paying attention. This is a clip from a longer episode where Neil and I cover Mars, black holes, the multiverse, dark matter, and why most people get probability wrong: ▸ Watch the full conversation: https://youtu.be/aUnkkHuorto ——— 📬 Get the transcript, fascinating bonus content, and my Monday M.A.G.I.C. I imagine that the things that Peter Theil is wrong about would fill dozens of encyclopedias.

About 10 years ago I was hiking with a friend when we wondered about a plant we’d run across. So he took a picture on his phone and an app told us what it was. Good Lord, could we have imagined that in 1986? Back then, the only hand-held device that could do that was the tricorder on Star Trek. And that was centuries away. Now no one thinks twice about such things.

Just a small correction: He is Peter Thief, NOT Peter Thiel.

My mother turned 101 this year. In every birthday celebration speech, I include some lines for the latest scientific discoveries and breakthroughs, and it never gets boring.

I'm a physics professor who's spent 25 years at the frontier of cosmology — building the instruments that imaged the universe's first light. Tyson's right that most people can't name a discovery from the last decade, but they've lived through gravitational wave detection, the first black hole image, and a thousand confirmed exoplanets. The stagnation debate (Thiel, Cowen, Collison) is more interesting than either side admits. Peter Thiel is just pissed because he hasn't figured out how to add more billions to his billions and stop others from moving ahead of him!

When I was a kid in the 50's-60's we walked to the library and read books. As a teen I used to think my grandmother lived through amazing times, 1898-1987, autos, planes, radio, TV, depression 2 world wars, Space adventure. Then I realized my Mom had lived in amazing time too, 1919-1991, Depression, 2 world wars, Korea, Vietnam, TV, space adventure, radio, early computers. Now at 75 I've also lived in amazing and trying times.
